New Employee Induction Manual Launched

Some of the most common problems our clients bring to us are problems with onboarding their new employees. They struggle with either drowning new employees, or “just winging it” which results in inconsistencies and missing essential information.

Why is that a problem? The first few days in a new job creates a clear impression of what it is like to be part of your business.

The induction process you use and the steps you follow tell your new employee if you are organised, professional and care about your staff. It highlights your work culture and demonstrates if you walk your talk in terms of living your espoused work values.

When done correctly, employee induction lays a firm foundation for the future of the employee with your business.

Induction as a retention strategy

Sometimes a few statistics can help explain a situation. Studies show that companies lose 17% of new hires within the first three months of employment, and 20% of all employee turnover happens within the first 45 days of employment. 86% of employees say that their decision to stay with a company long-term is made within the first six months of employment.

A 2007 study from the Wynhurst Group found that “newly hired employees are 58% more likely to still be at a company three years later if they had completed a structured onboarding process.”

Induction as a productivity strategy

It takes new hires 8-12 months to gain full job proficiency, and the lost productivity costs due to new hire learning can cost 1-2.5% of total business revenue. High turnover increases these costs even further.

Effective onboarding has been shown to increase employee performance by up to 11%.

Induction as a financial strategy

Turnover within a company can often be linked back to a poor initial induction process and turnover costs, on average, two times the annual salary.

Each person that you lose costs double their salary to recruit, hire and train. Each person that you lose costs your business money.

In other words – if you want higher productivity, profitability and employee retention, it pays to invest in a thorough induction process for your new employees.
